As a native daughter and lifelong resident of the D.C.-metro area, 9/11 is especially haunting for me. Over the years, it’s lifted my heart to see that the tone of 9/11 has shifted: While still a national day of sadness, it’s also now a national day of service, receiving an official designation by Congress in 2009.
